Core Tip: The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Hong Kong has found non-permissible levels of pesticide residues in a mango sample and a sweet pepper sample.
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Hong Kong has found non-permissible levels of pesticide residues in a mango sample and a sweet pepper sample.

As part of the investigation, CFS found that 101 vegetable and fruit samples at import, wholesale and retail levels were found to contain excessive pesticide residues.

CFS spokesman said: "The CFS collected the mango sample and sweet pepper sample at a supermarket in Tuen Mun and Lai Chi Kok respectively for testing under its regular Food Surveillance Programme."

The tests found that the mango sample contained chlorpyrifos at a level of 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which means the product contains 1.6 times the maximum residue limit of 0.05 ppm.

While, the sweet pepper sample was found to contain profenofos at a level of 0.97 ppm, which means 1.94 times the maximum residue limit of 0.5 ppm.

"Based on the levels of pesticide residues detected in the samples, adverse health effects will not be caused under normal consumption," spokesman added.

CFS said it will continue to follow up on the incident, and take appropriate action to ensure food safety and safeguard public health.
