Supplies of kale from California's Central Coast have kept the market on an even keel. With production in Yuma, Arizona and Mexican imports a couple of weeks away, it's unlikely there will be supply gaps during the transition.
“For the most part, supplies are coming from Salinas and they are pretty good,” said Scott Niizawa of Growers Express. “Supplies were good all summer, so markets have been steady.” On October 28, prices for a carton of bunched kale from the Central Coast were between $8.45 and $10.05, and prices for a carton from Oxnard were between $7.75 an $8.95.
“Prices have stuck to the $8.00 to $11.00 range, though they have sometimes crept down to $7.00,” said Niizawa. Harvesting will continue in the Central Coast through next month, and then supplies will come from Yuma and Mexico.
“Preliminary findings from Mexico suggest supplies are going to be good,” said Niizawa, “though that can change at any time.”
