Mercadona has purchased over 400,000 kilos of figs from producers in Lleida this campaign, which started in mid-August and finished on 31 October. This represents an increase of 50% compared to last year's purchases.
To be specific, the Valencian retailer has sold black figs from the municipalities of Alguaire, Almenar, Almacelles and Vilanova del Segrià, as reported by Mercadona in a statement.
Figs Fruits, one of Mercadona's suppliers, said that "it is a great opportunity to promote our product amongst consumers" and stated that this is a "positive agreement, because we offer a good product and it allows us to gain stability."
The supermarket chain has pointed out that this commitment to figs from Lleida can be framed within its strategy to supply a variety of local products at its stores, which also sell stonefruit, apples, pears or nectarines from Lleida-based suppliers like Catafruit or Nufri, among others.
Mercadona closed the year 2014 with total purchases from the province of Lleida worth 171 million Euro; a figure which reflects the long-term commitment of the Valencian company to the agro-food industry.
