“The prices for pineapples significantly decreased in the last few weeks,” states a German importer and wholesaler. While a few weeks ago the market was featured by the high prices and a low availability, the situation has changed now. “The supply has clearly increased. And this amount has led to a drop in the prices,” continues the expert.
Pressure on the market
The trader claims that there is a considerable pressure. “You could say that there is an uncontrolled increase in the amount of produce that is imported,” states the importer. Especially larger pineapples dominated the trade. “The demand is particularly large, we expect that in that area a shortage will arise. Many purchasers will then return to the smaller sizes."
“Speculation influences the trade”
The wholesaler doesn’t want to make a statement about the coming weeks: ”The trade can quickly change due to promotions, weather and delayed shipments,” he explains, “Speculation strongly influences the trade in pineapples. If some producers are hoping for fast money, they ship a lot of products, just like now."
The availability will decrease
The trader predicts a decrease in availability for the coming year. “We think that the supply won’t reach the level of the last weeks,” says the importer of exotic fruit. “Many trader expect that the supply will seriously decrease in the first quarter of 2016.”
