The supply of Belgian asparagus from the greenhouse is gradually increasing week by week. "At the moment we are at a supply of a few hundred boxes per day," says Hein Beudts. "The greenhouse season is also starting to get going in Dutch growers' organisations," he says.
Open ground in mid April
Buedts has also just started with the first asparagus. "There is no supply from the open ground yet, not even from under heated tunnels. The ground is still too wet to prepare the asparagus beds for the new production from the open ground. The first tunnel asparagus is expected in a few weeks. The real open ground will start in mid April."
A lot of supply in April
The prices are quite high and Hein expects this level to continue. "At the moment the prices at the auction are around 6 Euro per pound. In the Netherlands the price for loose asparagus is around 10 Euro per kilo. Due to the early Easter it doesn't look like asparagus will be cheap then. It is impossible to tell how the season will evolve after that. If the mild spring continues the season will get going early and there will be a lot of supply in April," he concludes.
