Domestic supply of Russian cabbage season is in full swing and expected to last for another 1-2 months, at which point they will switch to Serbian supply.
The demand in Russia for cabbage is so high that, despite being one the world's largest producers, current supply is also coming from Macedonia and Iran. A large Russian importer confirmed that they are seeing good quality, with stable prices in roubles, along with good volumes on the market.
Before the embargo, Russia often sourced cabbage from the Netherlands and Germany, but have now switched over to Macedonia, Serbia, Iran and the domestic market. The importer said that switch in supply is not something that has been noticed by consumers, with the quality staying at the same level of what it was before. The only real difference is that the final prices have increased due to now paying in dollars as opposed to euros.
The most popular cabbage size range from 1 to 2-1/2 kilos. Green cabbage, young cabbage and Chinese cabbage are the most popular varieties within the Russian market. When asked about new trends or whether they have seen a recent change in customer demand, the importer said that everything has stayed the same.
