It is still early days as cabbage producers in Poland are preparing for the 2016 season. Polish vegetable producer and distributor Cool Fruit offers two cabbage varieties and Andrzej Mierzejewski said that he expects production this season to be in line with last year, if not slightly higher.
"We are expecting our first harvest of cabbage around the middle of April. Everything depends on the weather, but everything indicates that it should be around this time. We are expecting similar volumes to last year, I am hopeful that there might be increased production because, up to now, the weather has been really good and the temperature is higher than last year." said Andrzej.
Due to current shortages on the Polish market, cabbage prices are on the up. White cabbage is currently at 1.00-1.50 pln zl with an average price of 1.30 pln zł/kg. Red cabbage 1.50 – 1.90 zł/kg with the price expected to reach 2.00 pln zł.
The biggest supplier is Germany while the domestic cabbage is out of the season, with small quantities also coming out of Belarus. Supplies also come from Italy and Macedonia just before the Polish season.
Marek Marzec from Ewa-Bis in Poland said that he has not seen any changes our trends in cabbage demand. This is most likely because it is seen as a traditional product in Poland.
When asked about what the largest market is outside of Poland, Marek said that it was Russia before the embargo, and it has now become the Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
