As reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a meeting was held between the Russian Minister of Energy and co-chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Iranian Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation, Alexander Nowak, and the Iranian co-chairman of the Commission and Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, Mahmoud Vaezi. The goal of the meeting was to study the viability of Iran replacing Ukrainian and Turkish products in the Russian market.
Firstly, the Russian Federation intends to increase food supplies from Iran, and Russia has already studied the possibility of reducing tariffs on imports of Iranian pistachios, raisins or dates, said Mr Nowak. In total, Iran will be able to deliver fruit and vegetable products to Russia worth $ 1 billion a year and fully replace the imports from Turkey.
Russian retail chains have also already announced that they are ready to boost the presence of food products from Iran on their shelves.
For its part, Russia is interested in the export to Iran of animal products (beef, poultry), cereals, vegetable oil and white sugar, reports Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Nowak urged the Iranian side to develop the corridor across the Caspian Sea to facilitate the bilateral supply of agricultural products.
The next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission will be held in Tehran in 2016.
