The demand on the onion market is typified as capricious by Tjerk Nagel of Konaxx Onions from the Fries St. Jacobi Parochie. "One day is different to the next. Brazil has demand for onions, but not no end, the East Block is informing, but its not concrete and the export to Africa is also in dribs and drabs. There isn't a single destination that is enticing at the moment."
Konaxx mainly exports within Europe with Scandinavia, Central Europe and the Baltic States as the main destinations. Customers are supermarkets, wholesalers and processors. "I'm not pessimistic, but we could do with some demand to keep the faith," says Tjerk. When asked whether there is pressure on the price yet, the processor replies: "Not quite, but it's an unstable balance."
The season has also had the necessary challenges in quality. "We are dealing with a natural product. A lot of mass grew in a short period of time last year with higher kilo yields, the aftermath of which we are now dealing with. Balding parties are a national phenomenon that we are dealing with."
