China: high onion prices, low supply

Since January this year, onion supply shortages started to hit the Chinese market and onion prices are rising. In February, the price of the newly listed Yunnan onions hit a new three-year height.

In the first half of March, yellow onion purchase price in Yuanmou peaked at 4 Yuan per kg, 3.5 times higher than that of the same period of last year. White onions where sold at 5.2 Yuan per kilogram, 3.7 times higher than a year earlier.

In earlier seasons, onion cold storage in Shangdong and Gansu Provinces had stock until the end of March. However, this year, cold storage onions have been completely sold out since Chinese New Year. Inventory has bottomed in Gangsu province.

The situation can change when a the new harvest arrives on the market by the end of March and the beginning of April.
