Core Tip: BelOrta sold the first Belgian raspberries of the season yesterday, Tuesday 29th March. The first five crates (12 punnets at 125 gr/punnet) were supplied by the company Rubibel.
These first raspberries were from the Tulameen variety, and came from forced glasshouse cultivation. The first crate was bought by Frudel.

BelOrta area expansion of 25%
In 2016 the raspberry area is slated to increase by 14 hectares, making the total number of hectares 72. All raspberries are cultivated under protection. The milestone of one million kilograms was reached last year. The Kwanza variety has grown to be BelOrta's main variety in just a few years. The area expansion has not come as a surprise, and is the result of growing consumption and longer availability.

Availability through the holidays
Not long ago soft fruit was a very seasonal product. During the last decade that period has been extended through innovative cultivation techniques and new varieties. Nowadays these beautiful homegrown products are available for longer periods.

Frudel
Frudel has been working with the raspberries from Rubibel for years. Frudel has the Tulameen raspberry grown especially for their customer Delhaize by Rubibel. Frudel is planning to have Belgian raspberries in their range as long as possible, and the grower has responded with more varieties and cultivation systems.
