The market view for cucumbers has been reasonably constant over the last few weeks. The Dutch cultivation looks of good quality according to sales organisation Kompany. Due to the weather conditions the productions were lower recently. How the market with develop further mainly depends on the amount of sun that shines. "No product is as dependent on the weather as a cucumber."
Last week there were few Spanish cucumbers on the market. There is still some spring cultivation to come. A number of Spanish cooperations carry cucumbers all year round. If there was a tendency two years ago for a number of chain stores to orientate themselves around year round Spanish product, there is less of that this year, according to Kompany. "They have to do all kinds of cultivation antics in Spain to realise a good, uniform quality all year round."
Once again a number of cucumber growers made the switch to Belgium in the last year. "The cucumbers made more in Belgium last year. And you might have more logistical costs, but if you're getting an additional price for the cucumber, those costs are sometimes gone. The question is whether Belgium will get this additional price again this year."
