The Gourmandine potato, a yellow fleshed potato with a smooth waxy skin and a nut flavour, is launching at Coles supermarkets in Victoria, NSW and South Australia this week beginning 18 April.
The Mitolo family from Virginia, South Australia, are the first Australian farmers to grow the Gourmandine potato, which is popular in Europe.
The Gourmandine seeds have been imported from France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
It is a three-time winner of the French “Taste of the Year Award” which is reviewed by an independent consumer panel.
Meanwhile, international researchers have found potatoes are good for the environment, with a recently published paper indicating that potato production is more environmentally sustainable than pasta and rice.
The paper, conducted by researchers from Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, England and published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, considered both greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption when growing the three food types, with potatoes proving to have the least negative impact on the environment.
