On Thursday 28 April, an apple exhibition will take place in Bengaluru city, organised by the horticulture department with the India China Economic and Cultural Council (ICECC). The event will exhibit technology for dehydrating apples and focus on the twinning of Beijing and Bengaluru.
A unique dehydrating technology will be introduced at the event to help the city preserve its apples. Peeled apple slices lose moisture when vacuum-packed. On opening of the packets, the dried apple chips reabsorb moisture and turn fresh once again. This unique technology will soon be the future of cut fruits, said the head of ICECC's Bangalore Chapter. "There are no chemicals or preservatives added and the fruits are preserved with the help of the air in the atmosphere. This will help a cosmopolitan, health-conscious and fast-paced city like Bengaluru."
Another official said, "Indian and Chinese apple cultivation practices are different. Climate is an important factor and while in India, the production of apples ends in March, Chinese production extends till June. Hence, Chinese apple appeals 10 to 12 per cent of the Indian market."
Five varieties of pears and around 20 varieties of apples, like golden and green ones, will be up for sale and display at the exhibition. Apple growers from China will come to the city to sell their produce directly to consumers. The apples will cost between Rs 120 and Rs 180 per kg.
At the event Chinese delegates and the mayor of the city will discuss how China can utilise the abundance of mango and banana in the city and there be an exchange program between the state's mango growers and China's apple growers. This is the first time an international level exhibition is being organised in Bengaluru to facilitate business to business development.
