First there was soy milk, then there was rice milk, next was almond milk, but could ‘milk’ made from yellow peas be the next dairy alternative health bloggers will be boasting about?
Commercially entering the US at the beginning of 2016, the plant-based ‘Ripple’ milk is catching attention for its high-in-protein content. According to the Ripple Foods website, its original flavoured milk contains 8gm’s of protein per serving whereas the company claims almond milk only contains 1gm.
Ripple also claims to have less sugar than dairy, almond, cashew and coconut milk. Other promoted health benefits include only 0.5gms of saturated fat per serving and higher levels of Vitamin D when compared with dairy, almond, cashew and coconut milk.
Ripple is only starting to enter US grocery stores like Whole Foods in a number of varieties including original, unsweetened, vanilla and chocolate. Alongside yellow peas its basic ingredients include sunflower oil, cane sugar and algal oil. There are no plans to bring the product to Australia as of yet.
