Pilgrim’s Pride recalls 5,176,844 pounds of poultry products on contamination concerns

US-based food company Pilgrim’s Pride has recalled 5,176,844 pounds of fully cooked chicken products which could be contaminated with foreign materials.

The scope of the latest recall includes a variety of chicken products that may be contaminated with extraneous metal materials. The products were produced on dates between 6 May 2015 and 3 December 2015.

The recall includes 42.9-lb boxes containing 6 - 5-lb clear bags of chicken and 6 - 2.15-lb sauce packets of "Green Dragon Fully Cooked Breaded Diced Chicken Leg Meat With a General Tso's Sauce" with 'use by' dates of 5/6/2016, 7/10/2016, and 8/6/2016 and packaging dates of 5/6/2015, 7/10/2015, and 8/6/2015.

Pilgrim's Pride recall also includes 10-lb boxes containing 2 - 5-lb clear bags of "Sweet Georgia Brand Fully Cooked Breaded Diced Chicken Meat" carrying a 'use by' date of 5/6/2016 and a packaging date of 5/6/2015.

The company had also issued recalls for its chicken products last month. On 26 April, it recalled around 4,527,300 pounds of fully cooked chicken nuggets produced on various dates from 21 August 2014 to 1 March 2016.

Another recall was issued on 7 April through which Pilgrim's Pride recalled approximately 40,780 pounds of fully cooked chicken nuggets produced on 5 October 2015.

The recalls were initiated after the firm received several consumer complaintsabout presence of plastic in their chicken nuggets. Following the complaints, the company apprised the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) authorities of the issue.

While investigating additional consumer complaints,, the FSIS personnel were able to identify more affected product types manufactured on variousdates.

However, there have been no reports of illnesses due to consumption of these products, according to the company.
