Demand for durians is high in Thailand, as are the prices. This is mostly being contributed to drought ravaging the country, as well as overseas demand for the Thai fruit. Many people are willing to pay more for durians which can cost up to 120 baht per kilogram.
In Phayao Province on the weekend, people were waiting in line to buy durians which were loaded into a pickup truck and brought to Phayao municipality from Chantaburi Province. Even though the fruit is sold at higher prices this year, people’s craving for durians hasn't waned.
Mr. Thanet Cheaujing, a durian vendor, said people continued to visit his pickup truck to buy durians which were being sold at 100-120 baht per kilogram. He attributed higher durian prices to water shortages and overseas demand for Thai durians. People said they had to buy durians now while they were still affordable. The longer they wait, the higher the prices for these fruits will become.
