Pilgrim’s Pride, Waco, Texas, is expanding its recall of fully cooked chicken products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials. The scope of this recall expansion now includes a variety of chicken products that may be contaminated with extraneous metal materials. The chicken products were produced on various dates between May 6, 2015, and Dec. 3, 2015. This is a second expansion of the original April 7, 2016, recall, and includes additional products and production dates.
The first recall on April 7 recalled 40,780 lb of fully cooked chicken nugget products. The recall expansion on April 26 recalled an additional 4,524,980 lb of fully cooked chicken product. This second recall expansion includes an additional 608,764 lb of product. The combined number of recalled product from April 7 to May 6 is 5,176,844 lb.
The products subject to recall bears establishment number “EST. 20728” inside the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) mark of inspection. These items were shipped for institutional use throughout the United States. According to Pilgrim’s Pride records, schools have purchased products through the company’s commercial channels.
The problem was first discovered after the firm received several consumer complaints regarding plastic contamination of the chicken nuggets. The firm notified USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) personnel of the issue on April 6. FSIS personnel identified more affected product types and dates of production after investigating additional consumer complaints of foreign material contamination received by the recalling firm.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
