Food safety and health inspections have been carried out this week in Romania to check the pesticide residue levels in fruit and vegetables imported from non-EU countries.

More than 6,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables imported from countries such as Turkey, Albania, Iran, Macedonia, Serbia, Colombia, Egypt, Ecuador, Argentina, Moldova and Kenya were checked by inspectors from the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), according to a statement issued by the institution.

In total, 313 batches (approximately 3,500 tonnes) were checked, as well as 33 warehouses (2,500 tonnes) by the Border Inspection Posts of North Constanta, South Constanta, Moravia and Otopeni.

The fruit and vegetable samples were taken for laboratory analysis to determine whether the pesticide residues fell within the accepted limits. Following the analyses, it was found that none exceeded the MRL's, according to the statement issued.
