After the ruthless flood struck whole Hubei provine, now it continues its march towards Anhui and Jiangsu province, the lower reaches of the Yangtze river, without any signs of weakening. According to the statistics collected by Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, up to 3rd July, a total of 26 provinces, including 1, 192 counties were hit by flood disaster, affecting 2, 942, 000 hectares of crops and 32.82 million people, which also had caused 186 people dead, 45 people missing, 56, 000 houses collapsed and direct economic loss of 50.6 billion yuan. It’s forecasted that there are still 2 round of heavy rains within the following 10 days.

Because of the continuous heavy rains, the fish farming regions in Anqing and Chizhou, Anhui province and Yixing, Changzhou and Nanjing, Jiangsu province also following Hubei province become the severely afflicted area.

Jiangsu

According to Haida (Changzhou branch), the disaster is much more severer in southern Jiangsu province, like the farming region between Liyang, Changzhou and Yixing. The river dyke in Yixing has already breached. Roads ad ponds employing net cage farming are also flooded. Many farmers are plans to buy more net to prevent the fishes from escaping. Based on the overall situation, all main crab farming regions are severely damaged from Hubei province to Jiangsu province. It’s expected that the price of crab in the future market will be pretty high.flood disaster

Zhangwei, staff from Aohua Group (Huaian branch), said that Changzhou mainly cultivated crab, bream, and freshwater shrimp etc. Because of the problem of drainage, many ponds are full of water and connected together by the water. Oppositely, the drainage situation in northern Jiangsu is better, so the affected ponds are not as many as that in Changzhou. But stormy weather imposes big influences on feeding, fish growth, water quality and so on. In Anhui, ponds farming crabs in Gaocun, Wuhu and Xuancheng are also flooded.
In liyang, Changzhou, rains have continued 4 straight days. Now the river water level is extremely high. River crab is the main farming species here. If the flood subsides slowly in the region, the crab farming in the affected river or lower-lying earth ponds will be finished. On the opposite side, the loss will be not so much, but the farming environment in the ponds will become worse because of rotten water plants and the change of water quality.
The river crab farming in Jintan, Changzhou is mainly through intensive culture with a relatively high farming technology. The production of unit area (mu) can reach about 300 kg. Farmers here worry most that the flood don’t subside and continue to exist for long time. They worry about not only that the crab will escape without restrains but also that the severe disease will break out in the future to the crabs.

In Yixing, river crab, freshwater shrimp and mix-cultured mandarin fish are the main farmed fish categories. The total farming area is up to 30, 000 mu, but 75% of them has been submerged by flood. A large amount of crabs and shrimp just escape away while the pond is breached by flood. According to previous farming practice, river crab and freshwater shrimp in unit area (mu) are as high as 300 kg and 200kg respectively, which will likely reduce a lot this year because of the severe floods.
In Gaochun, Nanjing, weather condition is also not in positive side. Some ponds are also flooded by waters. Farmers here mainly cultivate river crab while farm freshwater shrimp and mandarin fish in small proportion. Although a few crabs escaped, it’s the fourth time for crabs to unshell. The damaged pond environment will lead to disease breakout and further affect the crab growth in later stage.
Anhui

Mr. Zhang Junfei, the general manager of Anhui Jinnong Feed Co., Ltd, stated that heavy rains have continue two straight days in Chizhou and Anqing and the damage is worsening. Four Chinese family fishes, bream and crucian are the main farmed species here. Up to now, all the ponds are almost flooded and connected together because of large amount of water pouring. The situation is much worse and more dangerous in the ponds near rivers where all the fishes will escape once the pond dikes are breached or the river water submerges the pond.
