The Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety has started mass checks of markets, exchanges, auctions, wholesale stores, retail chains, as well as non-regulated places devoted to the sale of fresh fruits and vegetables across the country.
Inspectors are monitoring the origin of products and their proper labelling, according to the information specified in the documents accompanying them, thus checking compliance with current legislation. In the course of the inspections, samples are taken to check for the presence of pesticide residues and contaminants.
The first checks were made by inspectors of the Regional Directorate for Food Safety in Plovdiv with representatives of the media. They inspected 5 warehouses devoted to wholesale fruit and vegetable auction sales in the town of Pyrvenetc and a hypermarket in Plovdiv. So far, no drastic violations have been detected.
The purpose of these exceptional checks is to prevent unfair trade practices and the misleading of consumers about the origin, quality and safety of fruit and vegetables on the Bulgarian market.
