China: import fruit prices peak during Chinese New Year

During Chinese New Year, imported fruit prices continue to rise. Cherries are a popular gift, and generally fruit consumption during peaks during the days the Chinese spent at home, celebrating the New Year holidays with their families.

Guangzhou is the largest import wholesale market in China. This week and last week have witnessed sales peaks, with prices continuing to rise as well. The country is in holiday until the second week of February, when the market is expected to calm down.

The most popular fruit on the market are cherries. At present, the main varieties of Chilean cherries are: Lapins, Sweet Heart, Regina and Bing. Main brands are:  Copefruit, San Francisco, Agrofruta and Royal Rio King.

Lapins ar sold at 430 Yuan for 2 boxes of 2.5 kg (60 euros), 390 Yuan for 5 kg box 50 euros), Sweat Heart cherries go for 180 yuan for 6 times 1 kg of  (24 euros), and Regina are sold at 510 Yuan for twice 2.5 kg (70 euros).

A second popular product are grapes. Boxes of South African seedless black grapes are sold at 160 yuan (20 euros), red grapes at 155 yuan and green grapes 120 yuan. Peru red grapes are moved quicker through the market, selling at 245 yuan (33 euros).

Imported apple sales are generating better prices, and sales conditions are improving. American gala apple are sold at 480 yuan per 100 pieces and the American rose apples are sold at 600 Yuan per 72 pieces (80 euros).

American sweet oranges and Israeli grapefruit push citrus sales, 255 yuan for 72 pieces and 210 yuan for 40 pieces respectively.

Demand for Zespri kiwifruit is stable (210 yuan for 27 pieces and 200 yuan for 30 pieces of the golden kiwifruit variety).

Belgium pears are gaining market share. A box of 18 pieces is sold for 70 yuan (9.50 euros). Chilean blueberries and Australian nectarines, which recently gained market access, are also popular among shoppers. The Australian nectarines compete with the Chilean black plums, the former being sold at 190 yuan and the latter at 160 yuan per box.

Finally, Chilean avocadoes remain performing strongly: a small box goes for 130 yuan, a larger one for 190 yuan.
