Core Tip: The Smokehouse of NY in Mamaroneck is recalling smoked fish because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The Smokehouse of NY in Mamaroneck is recalling smoked fish because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been confirmed to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take 70 days to appear. You can see pictures of the recalled items at the FDA website.

The recalled products are Norwegian 4 ounce and 8 ounce and whole sides; Irish 4 ounce and 8 ounce; Scottish 4 ounce and 8 ounce; Pastrami 4 ounce and 8 ounce, Gravlax 4 ounce and 8 ounce; Trimmings 8 ounce; Sturgeon 4 ounce, Kippered Salmon 8 ounce, Sable 8 ounce, Whitefish Salad, and Trout Fillet 8 ounce. These products were distributed to markets, restaurants, and hotels in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Alabama, Minnesota, and Montana..

The products have a logo on every package with the name The Smokehouse of NY in black cryovaced bags. The expiration dates are from April 5 to April 19, 2017.

The recall was a result of a routine sampling program, which revealed there was Listeria bacteria in the warehouse. The company has ceased product, manufacturing, and distributing until this issue is solved.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed container or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Then clean out your fridge with a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Wash your hands well after handling these products.

If you consumed any of these recalled products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. They include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may only have a mild illness similar to the flu, but Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning can cause premature birth, infection in the newborn, stillbirth, and miscarriage.
