"Lemon prices increase every two days, especially for what concerns the organic produce," explains Daniele Di Mauro, operator at the Cesena wholesale market and exporter of Sicilian lemons.

"The 'Bianchetto' season is almost over, then it will be time for 'Verdello', though it is mostly destined to the processing industry as it is harder and has less juice. As the Italian season is coming to an end, prices are increasing. I also believe large groups are making big purchases to have stock available, and of course this contributes to the higher prices."

Italian lemons will be available for another 15 days, then we will have to wait for October. Argentinian and Spanish produce can already be found on the market, but the quality is just not the same. "Only one Spanish variety has good organoleptic qualities and a good appearance, while the Argentinian fruit is rather disappointing."

Argentinian lemons are currently sold at €2/kg, while the Italian ones are more expensive. Biachetto and Verdello have a shorter shelf-life than Primofiore.

Verdello are also known as "summer lemons". They have a characteristic deep green colour and a lovely aroma. They are produced by forcing another blossoming during the summer period and are available in July, August and September.
