The watermelon season has already started and it's new hype is "watermelon beer", presented by Laosong fruit cooperative located at Panggezhuang town in the Daxing District of Beijing. One 300 ml cup costs 40 yuan and it is already in short supply. The first batch was sold out in just two weeks after the presentation. Song Shao Tang, director of the cooperative, said it is impossible to apply deep processing technologies to watermelon juice, because it is difficult to preserve.
At the end of last year, a brewing company from North America visited Daxing District to find watermelons to use as an ingredient for wine and they found Song Shao Tang. "We carefully selected a few hundred kilos of watermelon for them to test, then they ordered more that ten thousand kilos. The first batch of beer was sent to Sanlitun bar street for test sales and the result was good."
Song Shao Tang also said that this year, before the watermelon season started, their cooperative has already prepared a jointly-produced, craft watermelon beer to promote in their fruit-picking garden.
