2017-2018 could be a record year for the date sector in Tunisia. Production is expected to reach 305,251 tons, i.e. +26.3% compared to 2016/2017. This exceptional harvest will increase Tunisia’s position amongst the 20 leading date producing countries (dominated by Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia). Samir Taieb, Minister of Agriculture and Hydraulic Resources, says that many efforts are being made in the export sector in order to secure new outlets- notably Morocco (which represents 30% of Tunisian date exports). Dates are mainly produced in the North and South of Tunisia. They exported over 109,800 tons in 2016/2017 (1st October-30th September) representing a $230 million inflow.
