The northern-western Azerbaijan region of Guba arguably produces the best apples of the country. It accounts not only for the largest number, but also for the greatest variety of sorts. Thanks to suitable soil and climatic conditions, apple trees grow well here; their fruits have many valuable qualities and can be stored for a long time.
There are more than 22,000 hectares of orchards in the Guba-Khachmaz zone. According to Azernews, this year, some 120,757 tons of apple crops have been harvested from Guba's orchard, of which some 80,000 tonnes (65-70 percent) are intended for export. So far, 40,000 tons of apples have been exported to foreign markets. Russia is at the forefront of the volume of goods shipped abroad.
Refrigerated warehouses are of great importance as about 90 percent of the exported apple harvest is first collected there, before going overseas. A number of steps have been taken to develop intensive gardening in the region. In recent years, the area of super intensive fruit gardens has reached 1,024 hectares, including 670 hectares of apples.
