Agricultural organizations and cooperatives of the Region of Valencia have been informed by the region's Councillor of Agriculture, Elena Cebrián, about the detection of the eighth Xylella fastidiosa outbreak in the province of Alicante, as well as of the measures to be enforced as a result.
The report was made in the course of a meeting attended by representatives of AVA, La Unió, ASAJA Alicante, FEPAC, UPA, COAG, Cooperatives Agroalimentàries, AILIMPO, the Citrus Management Committee and ASFPLANT. It also counted with the participation of the regional secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Francisco Rodríguez Mulero, and the General Director of Agriculture, Roger Llanes.
Those in charge explained that there have been detections of Xylella fastidiosa in plant material of the species Prunus dulcis (almonds), as in previous occasions. This time, it has also been observed in the following forest species: Calicotome spinosa and Phagnalon saxatile shrubs, the ornamental floral shrub Polygala myrtifolia, as well as Helichrysum italicum (mountain sempervivum), Rhamnus alternus (buckthorn) and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary).
To be precise, 23 plots with infected almonds have been detected in Altea, Benissa, Famorca, Gata de Gorgos and Tàrbena. As for forest species, the list of plants affected includes Calicotome spinosa and Helichrysum italicum in Beniardà, Phagnalon saxatile, Polygala myrtifolia and Rosmarinus officinalis in Benissa and Phagnalon saxatile and Rhamnus alternus in Callosa d'en Sarrià.
The Council is enforcing phytosanitary measures for the eradication and control of the bacterium, in application of Law 43/2002 on Plant Health.
