Trade wars and tariffs
Within the New Zealand pavilion there was uncertainty as to what the future holds for various exports due to changing political situations around the world. There is concern as to what effect the tariffs on US apples to China will have on New Zealand apples exported to the US, as there will be more US apples on the domestic market, and how the other markets will evolve to change in US apple export destinations.
Peru and other Latin American countries hope to take advantage of the tariff war, as it might lead to more US fruit on other markets, and so will affect the prices and so on. Less US fruit in China should be seen as an opportunity, according to the Latin American countries.
South Africans, while concerned about what could potentially happen in their country if land appropriations do go ahead, try to remain optimistic and will wait to see how the government handles the situation. While there is unrest in the country it is not as bad as it appears in the media, but producers are concerned that it will affect investment in the country which will have a lasting effect.
Some Spanish companies have taken part in the exhibition since the beginning, however, now the Chinese market, and Asian market is general is growing in importance more companies are exhibiting. The Asociacion Espanola de Caqui hopes that at some point the Chinese market will be opened for Spanish kaki export, as they notice there is good demand for their product. For Zummo Innovaciones Mecanicas it's their first time exhibiting, and they have received very good feedback on their juice machines in the first two days.
The Peruvians are certainly present with a large amount of companies. Not to be missed is Camposol China, who have recently celebrated their one year anniversary of having an office in Shanghai.
Demand for Dutch products increases
A Dutch exporter said that locals in Hong Kong are becoming more interested in foreign products. “We used to sell our products mainly to hotels and restaurants visited by western customers, but there is more and more demand from supermarkets. This could have to do with the fact that Chinese products do not enjoy a very good reputation in Hong Kong.”
The competition from countries that offer cheaper products, such as Australia and Malaysia, isn’t difficult to cope with. “The demand is stable and slightly increasing.”
China least represented
An Italian exhibitor commented that the Asian market is well represented at Fruit Logistica. “There are people from all over the continent. Actually, the country with the least representation is China itself.”
This morning the CEO of Frigga, Paddy Pan, launched their Pilot of Temperature Monitor 2019. This new Temperature Data Logger will be different from the traditional USB Data Logger. This new product will use real time measurement to track the temperature of the products. This will benefit the product`s freshness and reduce food loss. They also made the product user friendly, so everyone can use this technology easily.
