"Even in the winter months, it is rare for cucumbers to cost more than one Euro," said Michael Koch, market analyst at AMI. Compared to the same month last year, the price of cucumbers has increased by 130 percent.
In 2017, each unit was sold for 49 cents; however, the value of cucumbers has since been climbing, eventually reaching high levels. The reason for this is the smaller supply.
Several foreign producers got rid of their old plants and cultivated new ones, so the production volume was reduced. Also, the unusually hot summer recorded in Germany has taken a negative toll on the domestic production.
"Cucumbers are sensitive. When it gets very hot, or the crop gets a lot of sun, there is an impact. For example, there is a risk that the plants will lose their flowers," said Koch. Cucumbers are a very popular food item in Germany, where they are usually consumed in salads or sandwiches, or eaten raw. (dpa, orange.handelsblatt.com, spiegel.de).
