45% of the cucumbers consumed in the EU in 2020 were of Spanish origin

Spanish cucumber exports to the European Union have registered steady growth since 2017. According to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Euroestacom statistical service, in 2020 Spain exported 531.56 million kilos of cucumbers to the community market, i.e. 22.54% more than in 2017.

In contrast, the Netherlands exported 334.32 million kilos to the EU in 2020, i.e. 6.99% less than in 2017.

In recent years, Spanish cucumbers sold in the EU have been more expensive than those from the Netherlands. In 2020, Spain sold its cucumbers to the Community markets at an average price of €1.10/kg, while the Dutch sold their cucumbers at an average price of €0.97/kg.

In general, cucumber purchases by the Member States increased by 7.11% between 2017 and 2020, totaling 1,177.97 million kilos. 45.13% of them were of Spanish origin.

The total value of cucumbers purchased by the Member States in 2020 was 1,163.22 million euro (€ 0.99/kg), i.e. 11.22% more than in 2017. Spanish cucumbers exports to the EU in 2020 stood at 583.33 million euro, accounting for 50.14% of the total value.

81.55% or 433.47 million kilos of the cucumbers that Spain sold to the community markets in 2020 came from Almeria, i.e. 37.8% of all the cucumbers that were sold last year in the EU. Almeria, which surpasses the Netherlands in cucumber sales in community markets, still hasn't managed to surpass the price paid to the Dutch. The cucumber from Almeria did not exceed € 0.86/kg and had a total sales value of 372.31 million euros.
