As per the First Advance Estimates of the production of major Kharif crops for 2018-19, released by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers’ Welfare recently, the production of grains was about 141.59 million tonne (MT).

Of this, rice accounted for 99.24 MT; nutri/coarse cereals accounted for 33.13 MT; maize accounted for 21.47 MT; pulses accounted for 9.2 MT; tur accounted for 4.08 MT and urad accounted for 2.65 MT.

Oilseeds accounted for 22.19 MT. Of this, soybean accounted for 13.46 MT; groundnut accounted for 6.33 MT and castorseed accounted for 1.52 MT. Sugarcane accounted for 383.89 MT.

About 32.48 million bales of cotton (170kg each) and 10.17 million bales of jute and mesta (180kg each) were produced during the year, based on the feedback received from states and validated with information available from other sources.

The aforementioned estimates of production, as per the First Advanced Estimates for 2018-19, were vis-a-vis the comparative estimates for the years 2003-04 onwards.

The cumulative rainfall in the country during the monsoon season, which was between June 1 and September 12, 2018, was eight per cent lower than the long period average (LPA).

The cumulative rainfall in North West India, Central India and South Peninsula during the aforesaid period has been normal. Accordingly, most of the major crop-producing states have witnessed normal rainfall.

However, these are preliminary estimates and would undergo revision based on further feedback from the states.
