The Spanish food sectors are profiting a year after the start of the trade treaty between Canada and the EU (CETA) from the opportunities the treaty provides. The export figures have risen considerably. According to FIAB, the federation of the food and drink industry, the export to Canada grew by 18% in 2017 compared to 2018. This tendency continued throughout the first half of the year, with an increase if 8.35% compared to the same period in the previous year. This means that the export growth of food to Canada since the start of CETA last year is just as high as the growth throughout the last ten years.
In 2017 there was primarily a considerable increase in export of table olives, olive oil, wine, juices, spices and frozen and canned vegetables.
According to the sector union Fepex the export amount in the fruit and vegetable sector grew by almost 90% in the first half of 2018, to a turnover of over €40 million. It is estimated that the total export at the end of 2018 could reach €100 million, compared to €52 million in 2017.
The most exported products to Canada are: citrus, cabbage, garlic, onion and peppers.
