"We started our mango shipments from Ecuador less than two weeks ago, although we still have some fruit arriving from both Mexico and Brazil," said Cote Clark of LA Produce Distributors. The market is also strong with prices into the double digits. "Supplies from Ecuador are about normal and we are seeing good demand for mangoes with solid pricing," Clark added.
Manila mango excellent from Ecuador
One of the varieties of mango that LA Produce Distributors ships is the Manila mango. Originally from the Philippines, this mango is more slender and elongated than most other varieties and in some ways has similarities to the Ataulfo, or 'honey' mango. They are grown in Mexico and South America, including Brazil and Ecuador, but according to Jesse Garcia of LA Produce Distributors, the Manila mangoes from Ecuador are preferred over the Brazilian ones.
"The first arrivals of Manila mangoes arrived from Ecuador last week," he explained. "Most of them are shipped from Ecuador. There is also a small amount of volume that comes from Brazil. Ecuador, however is closer to both the West and East Coasts so the Manila mangoes are of superior quality once they enter the US market."
East Coast office opens up
LA Produce Distributors has been delivering produce on the West Coast and recently opened up an office on the East Coast in order to provide greater access to the eastern side of the country. Many of their category items will be available through the East Coast office.
"We have partnered up with Paul Ross who now runs our East Coast office in New Jersey," Garcia shared. "It has been running for a month now and he handles produce items such as grapes, citrus, mangoes, and many others. Our purpose was to expand and provide a presence on the East Coast to better serve our customers there."
