Core Tip: By August this year, avocado shipments surpassed the export record achieved in 2017, which amounted to US $631 million.
By August this year, avocado shipments surpassed the export record achieved in 2017, which amounted to US $631 million. This was partly due to the greater supply in countries such as Spain (+14%) and the Netherlands (+20%).

The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rogers Valencia, said that the avocado was also positioning itself in Asia. In the first eight months of the year, avocado exports to China, Japan, and Hong Kong amounted to US $29 million, US $12 million and US $11 million, respectively.

Peru became the third biggest supplier of avocados to China and Hong Kong, and Japan's second biggest supplier.

In this line, and considering that non-traditional exports have also been recording historical figures (as they are estimated to amount to US $14 billion this year) the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Edgar Vasquez, said that the avocado could be this year's main export product.

"Last year, the fresh grapes were the main export product. However, they could be surpassed by the avocado this year," he stated.

Vasquez, who made a presentation at the XIII International Summit of Foreign Trade organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL), said that the agricultural industry had been growing homogeneously with other sectors, such as the textiles-confection, metalworking, and chemicals and plastics sectors.

He also said that the mandarins were having a remarkable performance in the markets of Europe and the United States. In addition, he highlighted the entry of blueberries and prawns.

"More and more products from the food sector have a high growth potential in Asia, the United States, and Europe," he said.

He also said that Latin America was the main destination market for non-traditional exports.

"If one sees the set of Peruvian exports, just over 40% of what Peru exports to the world goes to Asia, 28% to Europe, and 27% to the United States. The rest goes to Latin America," he said.

"However, if you only see non-traditional products, Latin America is the main destination. Latin America is the main market for more than 33% of the products with added value," he added.

Growth
He said that Latin America was followed by the United States and Canada, with 29%, Europe (15%), and Asia (less than 7%). "Asia offers a great potential for our non-traditional exports."

Finally, he said, if the trade war between the US and China ceases, exports are projected to grow by 10% in 2019 and amount to US $55 billion. Otherwise, they expected to increase by 5%.
