Data from Henan Zhengzhou Market Surveillance shows that the price of many different kinds of vegetables in Zhengzhou Market significantly increased in the last few weeks. The prices of bok choy, celery, white radish, cucumber, green pepper, and bitter melon increased by around 20%, while the prices of oilseed rape and string beans increased by more than 50%.
The main reason for this development is the weather. The cold weather extended the growing period of local vegetables and vegetable supply from other areas did not reach the market in time. Demand temporarily exceeded supply and the price consequently increased. When temperatures recover and outside supply arrives, the market shortage will be solved, and the prices are expected to fall back to regular levels.
