Previously, when poor weather conditions affected vegetable production, the price briefly increased, but now that the weather has become cooler again, vegetable supplies continue to grow. This has caused price fluctuations in the Beijing Xinfadi Market. CEO of the market, Zhang Yuelin, stated that the price of vegetables gradually returned to normal levels after a brief increase from the last week of August onward. There are several kinds of vegetables where there is room for the price to fall even further as the supply volume grows.
Zhang further stated that the reason for the initial price increase in early August was the high temperature and heavy rainfall in July. This extreme weather affected vegetable production as the plants began to rot both in the field and in storage. This reduced the supply volume and the price consequently increased.
The damage from poor weather conditions can become manifest in two different ways: first, the weather has an influence on harvest, selection, and transport. This influence is relatively small and does not last long. Secondly, the effect on vegetables during plantation or growing periods is relatively large and can lead to price fluctuations down the road.
The weather has recently been favorable to vegetables that prefer cooler growing conditions. Their supply volume will continue to grow if the weather does not drastically change. The price of some vegetables will fall even further as supply grows.
