While the lion's share of fruit and vegetables - parallel to the current social discussions - are now on the shelves without plastic, cucumbers are still often wrapped in plastic. This is strangely enough also true for organic products. Rewe now wants to react to this: In the future, the Group will be offering organic cucumbers all year round without a plastic wrap, but with a sustainable adhesive label.
The problem so far has been that the organic cucumbers were sourced outside the domestic season or in Spain's cold season. Shrink wrap should protect organic produce from dehydration and any damage on the way to the shelves. The many individual stations on the transport route have been adjusted, so that the products now remain fresh even without a plastic wrap.
Organic products with short transport routes
For a long time, organic cucumbers have been offered in unpackaged form, but this was the case only in summer. Since 2016, Rewe has been sourcing conventional as well as organic cucumbers from German and Dutch greenhouses as much as possible, thus avoiding long transport routes. As a result, no plastic wrapper is necessary.
