Satur Farms of Cutchogue, New York is recalling Baby Spinach and Mesclun with specific lot numbers because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The product was sold in New York and Florida through retail stores. No illness have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

Sampling by the Florida Department of Agriculture and New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets uncovered the problem. The recalled product is marked with Satur Farms brand name.

The product sold at the retail level is packaged in 5 ounce, 10 ounce, and 16 ounce plastic clamshell containers. The Spinach is lot #18494 and #18513. The Mesclun is lot #18520. This product was also sold to food service facilities. That product is packaged in sealed poly bags in 2-1/2 pound, 3 pound, 4 pound, 4 x 2.5 pound, and 4 x 3 pound sizes. The lot numbers are the same for both the retail and food service products.

If you purchased either of these products, don’t eat them. Leafy greens that are contaminated with pathogens are more problematic because there is usually no kill step, such as heating to 160°F, before the consumer eats it. You can throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package in a garbage can with a lid, or you can return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund.

It’s then a good idea to clean our your refrigerator or pantry, or wherever you stored this product, with soap and water or a mild bleach solution to kill any bacteria. Satur Farms is asking that all consignees hold and discontinue selling their stock of this product, and contact the company for instructions for returning or destroying it.
