US-based Smithfield Foods has completed the migration of all Systems Applications and Products (SAP) in Data Processing software onto a single, unified S4/HANA SAP platform on Virtustream Enterprise Cloud.
Virtustream is an enterprise-class Cloud company and a Dell Technologies business.
With the consolidation of SAP applications onto Virtustream Enterprise Cloud, Smithfield can achieve improved performance with its multi-Cloud strategy and cost savings, whilst also freeing up resources for internal teams to focus on innovation.
Smithfield Foods global CIO Julia Anderson said: “To accomplish the next phase of our digital transformation journey, we needed a provider that had deep expertise and understood our specific requirements for mission-critical applications and multi-Cloud support.
“In selecting Virtustream, we have already seen incredible results such as reducing our IT costs by consolidating SOWs and right-sizing our VMs to future-proof our legacy infrastructure.”
Smithfield and Virtustream developed the One SAP project, which was commenced in July 2018 to transfer all of Smithfield’s operations for SAP to Virtustream Enterprise Cloud.
With the deployment of this solution, Smithfield cuts down the consumption of their SAP environment by taking advantage of Virtustream Enterprise Cloud’s scalable, on-demand resources. This enables Smithfield to gain the flexibility to pay for only what they consume.
It is estimated that Smithfield will save $3m in IT costs over the next three years.

In December 2018, the meat processing company opened its distribution centre in Tar Heel, North Carolina.
Constructed with an investment of more $100m, Smithfield’s 500,000ft² facility features an expanded blast cell cold storage unit.
