“The garlic output this year is a little more than last season, total output in China for all areas is about 8.7 million tons. The quality is a little less than last season. Furthermore, it's not only China that has a big export volume, other countries also can supply to our customers. I think in the future it will be harder for China’s garlic market. The international market is more or less stable now, because of the Chinese Spring Festival, everyone in China had a holiday and the factories closed and stopped processing for a while. After this period, the garlic prices suddenly started to increase. Domestic and foreign demand increased last week, though this will just be a temporarily increase. Furthermore, we estimate that the acreage this season fell by 30%, ” Said David from Shandong Haijiang International Trading Co.,Ltd.
Haijing is also looking into some new markets for their garlic, as David explains: “We export garlic to more than 60 countries, to big markets like Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, Holland, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Colombia, Ecuador, Malaysia, Ukraine, UK and so on. Indonesia always has the largest demand and takes about 30% of the total world demand. We are looking to export our garlic to Senegal and some other African countries, because their economy is growing fast and their demand for garlic directly from China is increasing.”
This year the Chinese ginger market is doing quite well, the output is lower because of the heavy rain and this also influenced the quality a bit, there is more thin ginger than fat ginger, but the price overall is higher. “At the moment ginger demand is good. Especially now after the Chinese Spring Festival, the demand has increased, which also caused the price to increase this week. We have demand for fresh ginger from Asia and the Middle East, and for air dried ginger from the Europe.”
“Our onion output is more or less the same as before, but when we harvested our Gansu onions there was heavy rain, this caused some problems with the quality in the beginning, but now it is okay again. This year the demand for yellow onions increased a lot, especially for the big size 70/90, we got some orders for shipping. This is because of the problems with onions in Europe. Considering the quality we will stop loading onions until the end of February. New crops will be harvested soon from Sichuan area, but this is not the right quality for export.”
“Besides the export business, we also do some import business, so we attended the Berlin Fruit Logistica to meet new clients and have a chance to see our old clients. It was a very fruitful visit and we want to thank everyone that visited our booth.”
