As a trial, a branch of ICA Maxi in Stockholm is selling environmentally friendly plant feed made from fruit and vegetable waste. Earlier, the organic waste was destined for the production of biogas. Now, the unsold fruit and vegetables are fermented in cooperation with ETC Näring, and sold as plant feed. It concerns about 100 kilos of products ignored by consumers because they don’t look good anymore, but that are still edible. Everything that’s no longer edible, is still destined for the biogas production.
“In the first week we sold ten bottles right away. We consider that to be a good result, because this plant feed is twice as expensive, due to the higher costs, as the conventional plant feed we also sell,” says Andreas Fomin of ICA Maxi Barkarby.
“As a result of the use of mineral plant feed, the soil becomes less capable of retaining water, food and oxygen,” Jan Röed of ETC Näring explains. “Organic feed leads to more resilient production systems, which are better prepared for climate change and the more extreme types of weather.”
