On Thursday evening MPs voted 413 to 202, a majority of 211, for Theresa May to ask the European Union for an extension. This could mean the deadline is put back by three months to 30th of June, but any extension must first be agreed by all of the other 27 members of the EU.
The Prime minister is planning to hold another "meaningful vote" on her withdrawal deal by Wednesday 20th March, after already being overwhelmingly defeated in two previous votes.
The default legal option is still for the UK to leave with a no deal on 29th of March.
