It is now possible to bring your own containers to some aisles of the Carrefour supermarkets.

Carrefour has committed further to its “Act for Food” initiative. The retailer invites its clients to bring their own containers to do their shopping at the departments where “sales are assisted” like the fish, bakery, pastry, meat and catering departments.

The store has however the right to refuse the containers “that are not clean, dry or adapted,” in the interest of the consumer.

The association Zero Waste France applauds the initiative and encourages other stores to do the same. “It is urgent that supermarkets such as yours take action, not only to facilitate the initiatives of the better informed clients, but also to touch a clientele who, if better informed, would be more willing to adopt this habit.” In the framework of a “my zero waste store” campaign launched in 2014, the association noted more than 145 stores in Lille, 140 in Lyon and 120 in Strasbourg having embraced their clients’ containers.

In France, 3.5 million tons of plastic waste is produced each year, including 2 million tons in packaging.
