Core Tip: China has suspended imports of broken rice from Myanmar since the third week of March.
According to Myanmar's domestic traders, China has suspended imports of broken rice from Myanmar since the third week of March. UNayLin Zin, secretary-general of the Myanmar Rice Processors Association, said that only rice was allowed to be traded on the border between China and Myanmar, while some traders had been exporting rice in a broken rice category. Therefore, the Chinese government has seriously curbed all the trade in broken rice, and has now suspended imports of broken rice. There are rumors that Myanmar's rice export to China has been suspended, but in fact, rice export licenses are divided into broken rice license, long-grain rice license and short-grain rice license. The export tax on broken rice is 5%, while the export tax on rice is 50% to 60%. Because of the high export tax on rice to China, many businesses export illegally to avoid tax. At present, the export of broken rice has been suspended. According to Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce, from April to December in 2018, Myanmar exported 1.7 million tons of rice and broken rice, with an output value of $578 million.
