January 13 was the deadline set by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for European agri-food sectors to submit comments about the 25% tariff increase imposed by the Donald Trump government. Up to that date, more than 22,000 comments have been received.
Now a period of consultation and review follows, in which the US Government, after studying the comments received, will decide whether to definitively eliminate these tariffs, to raise them from the current 25% to 100%, or to add new products that had so far been exempt.
The White House is expected to announce its decision in late January. The conflict, which has put the European Union and the United States face to face because of aid to the aeronautical sector, has been on-going for almost three months and has hit the agri-food sector. Spain is one of the most affected countries, with losses estimated at up to "600 million Euro per year" in Andalusia alone.
