Lidl Ireland has introduced the first fully compostable potato bag in the country, in conjunction with Meade Potato Company. The two-kilogramme packs of Meade White Potatoes feature packaging made from FSC-certified sustainable paper, strengthened with starch.
The net in the bag is made of corn starch, while the printing uses water-based ink.
'Positive Change'
CSR manager in Lidl Ireland, Ciara Sheehan, commented, "As we’re fully committed to ensuring we drive positive change for the environment and our customers, we’re excited to be the first retailer in Ireland to introduce a 100% compostable form fill potato bag."
The bag is completely free of plastic and uses 34% less paper than traditional paper bags, the retailer said. It is suitable for disposal in brown bins for industrial composting.
Philip Meade Jr, commercial manager in Meade Potato Company, said, "The introduction of this bag represents a win for the environment and the consumer. Plastic that is hard to recycle has been eliminated and replaced with paper that can be composted, ending up ultimately as fertiliser, possibly for growing more potatoes," he added.
