The British pear season coincides with the annual Movember campaign. This campaign raises awareness around important men’s health issues. This year, leading nutritionist Rob Hobson has partnered with British Apples and Pears to champion the benefits of pears for men’s health.
Research has revealed that pears provide a significant amount of fibre and other essential nutrients to support men’s overall health. Increasing our fibre intake is hugely beneficial for our health. It has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, colorectal cancer and high cholesterol. Despite this, only 12% of men meet the recommended 30g fibre intake per day.
High fibre diets may also help to facilitate weight loss. Two thirds (67%) of men in the UK are overweight, while a quarter (26%) are clinically obese. Sufficient evidence has outlined the link between eating more fruits and vegetables and maintaining a healthy weight, keeping us feeling full and satisfied helps to minimise unhealthy snacking. Pears also contain a particular type of soluble fibre called pectin which can help to reduce cholesterol in the body.
