Denmark-based Arla Foods Ingredients is unveiling a concept functional drink to aid in rehydration and recovery. The RTD sports nutrition solution features Lacprodan SP-9213, a whey protein isolate that the company states is able to retain its functionality when paired with electrolytes.
The new beverage targets what the company claims are two of the most significant goals in sports nutrition – replenishing lost fluids and accompanying electrolytes and promoting muscle recovery.
“This is a combination that many of our customers have asked us for, and we’re delighted to help them meet two of the biggest needs in the sports nutrition space,” says Mathias Toft Vangsoe, sales development manager for health and performance nutrition at Arla Foods Ingredients.
Scoring nutrition goals
According to the company, studies have shown that a mere 2% of fluid loss during athletics can reduce performance by as much as 10%. Moreover, it notes that consumers are increasingly aware of the possible effects hydration and electrolytes can have on physical performance and athletic achievement.
Additionally, the company states that science has aptly demonstrated that protein intake between workout and training sessions can promote peak muscle recovery and increase output.
The company further states that as much as 43% of consumers in the sports nutrition space are seeking added protein in their exercise and fitness-related products, with 23% affirming a preference for products containing electrolytes.
“The high-protein and hydration trends are two of the most important drivers in sports nutrition right now – as demonstrated by the popularity of functional waters,” underscores Vangsoe. “This new concept shows how brands can help consumers simultaneously rehydrate and recover with beverages that contain both electrolytes and high-quality protein.”
All win, no loss
The functional ingredients player states that its new drink illustrates how brands and companies can meet sports nutrition needs “without sacrificing on taste.” The beverage comes in a 500 ml bottle and contains 25 g of Lacprodan SP-9213, allowing for on-pack statements such as “contains electrolytes,” “high-protein,” “low lactose” and “low sugar.”
The company also affirms that the RTD beverage has a refreshing and light taste that will pair well with a variety of flavors.
It is featuring the beverage at SupplySide West 2022 in Las Vegas, US, alongside two other products. “Protein In Every Layer” is a protein bar that is also made with the company’s high-quality Lacprodan range of milk and whey proteins.
“Whey More Powerful” is another whey protein offering with the pure beta-lactoglobulin, Lacprodan BLG-100 – an ingredient that has been shown to improve the protein intake of patients suffering from chronic kidney disease due to its low phosphorus levels.
The offering boasts 45% more leucine than is available in the other whey protein isolates that are currently commercially available.
