Core Tip: Europe has approved a patent on Virun technology designed to add omega-3 fatty acids into beverages while the United States has given the technology a Notice of Allowance, Walnut-based Virun said June 4.
A Notice of Allowance is sent to a company applying for a patent if, on examination, it appears the applicant is entitled to a patent under the law, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Virun’s OmegaH2O technology is designed to deliver clear, shelf stable omega-3 fatty acids in the form of DHA and DHA/EPA into shelf stable beverages.

A water-soluble and clear concentrate encapsulates the omega-3 fatty acids, according to Virun. The concentrate allows finished beverage manufacturers to add small amounts of a concentrate, much like they might do with a flavor additive. This tactic may make it less expensive to incorporate omega-3 fatty acids directly, and it reduces the need for further processing, according to Virun.

Virun is engaged in licensing, investment opportunities and strategic partnering in order to expand operations, said Nickols Huang, president of Virun, a biotechnology company.
